The weather is getting warmer which means there’s more opportunity to air dry your hair! Air drying is my personal favorite method of styling but it can be hard for some people to embrace their natural texture. With a few tips and some product recommendations I encourage everyone to give it a try.
When air drying I try to encourage any natural wave that may be in the hair. After washing and conditioning, run a wide tooth comb or wet brush through your hair and get your part where you like it. Scrunch out as much water as possible with your hands and then use a microfiber towel or tee shirt to squeeze out some more water, starting at the ends of your hair and working your way up.
Next I like to apply a cream based moisturizer or a light oil. Put the product in the palm of your hands, starting with dime size amount, you can always add more, coat your hands with the product and then again starting at the ends of your hair scrunch the product in working your way up. By the time you get to the top of your head you should have minimal product left on your hands, you don’t want to put too much product toward the root because it may weigh your hair down.
The next and probably hardest part of the process is keeping your hands off your hair until it fully dries! Playing with it while its drying can make it frizzy. Once your hair is completely dry you can shake it out and add a little texture spray at the root for some extra lift.
The following are some products I like for air drying!
For fine hair a lighter spray on leave in treatment may be all you need! I recommend Staying Alive by Kevin Murphy. Its a lightweight hydrating treatment packed with proteins. Helps to keep your hair silky smooth and free of frizz while you air dry.
For medium to thick coarse hair Killer Curls by Kevin Murphy is my go to. It is a cream based curl/wave activator that fights frizz and adds moisture. It isn’t sticky or crunchy at all and leaves hair moisturized with natural movement.
If you prefer an oil, Oi Oil by Davines is a wonderful anti frizz oil for dry hair. It adds shine and softness without the heavy residue that some oils leave behind.
